The Village Work Centre
We are a protective Work Centre for adults with cerebral palsy/multi disabilities. Started in 1984 The Palms Work Centre commenced with 15 workers.Today there are 135 workers enrolled at our Centre, which as of 1 April 2002 has been re-named The Village Work Centre.
The majority of these workers come from disadvantaged homes on the Cape Flats, Langa and Mitchells Plain. We provide those less advantaged men and women in the community with the opportunity of steady and appreciated jobs, as well as regular stimulation and companionship. Parents are being encouraged to play a larger and more meaningful role in the welfare and care of their Cerebral Palsy adult or child, and to this end we enlist their help in our fundraising efforts.
- In our Assembly Section we do mostly contractual work like making up gift boxes, bundling, promotional packaging, heat sealing (geyser blanket), folding, inserting of statements, glueing, cleaning and sorting of hangers, pre packing, collating and assembling of Magical Beans.
- We also do off-site contracts and wheelchair repairs.
- There is also a small sewing and woodwork section.
- Goods produced are sold out of hand, also at craft markets and at our own morning market.
- We collect newspaper, cardboard, plastic and tins for re-cycling.
The Centre is open from 8:00 – 15:30, Monday to Thursday and on Fridays we close at 14:30.
In addition to the aid from the State in respect of each worker, the Centre receives a monthly grant from Community Chest and is further assisted by Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association under whose auspices the Centre functions.
Your provision of contract work to our Village Work Centre would be greatly appreciated.
The Village is able to do the following tasks at the Centre: assembly work, sewing, wheelchair repairs, packaging, labeling and filling envelops to mention but a few.
